Hornlink Programs

Currently, HORNLINK is focusing on integrated programs including water and environmental sanitation, education and agriculture. HORNLINK programs will follow these intervention logics:

Food Security

HORNLINK aims to enhance food security, nutritional status and improvement of self-reliance by improving household food self-sufficiency and income; increase supplies at market level through the rehabilitation and development of production systems and improve emergency preparedness and response mechanisms through these interventions.

Education

HORNLINK aims to apply a sustainable and community-based approach to the rehabilitation, renewal and reconstruction of the education sector, giving more emphasis to the establishment and support of primary and adult level education initiatives through these interventions:

Livelihood

Hornlink strategy is support the livelihoods of vulnerable people in the agro-pastoralist, fishing and IDPs communities, living within a situation of chronic conflict and political instability. Hornlink’s objective in this field is to provide immediate emergency support, together with a durable solution in the agro-pastoralist and fishing sectors. In addition, Hornlink’s program is directed to young Somali entrepreneurs who want to diversify their businesses or to start new income generating activities.

Agriculture, Fishing & Livestock

Emergency Response

Somalia is facing the most severe humanitarian crisis in the world today. Conflict, intense insecurity, recurrent and protracted droughts, severe malnutrition, massive displacement and death from curable diseases are only a few of the many problems that have been afflicting the Somali people in the last twenty years. This chronic emergency state has eroded the people’s traditional coping mechanisms and drained all their resources, making them extremely vulnerable. As a result of the failure of successive rains, which determined increased livestock asset losses and crop failure, the food security situation deteriorated dramatically, leading some areas of the countries under famine conditions.

Emergency Response

Thousands of people are on the move in search of food and water, and are exposed to serious human rights violations, such as gender based violence and human trafficking. Moreover the combination of poor sanitation conditions, shortage of safe water, high malnutrition rates has increased risks of outbreaks of infectious diseases. To save the situation Hornlink has been responding with both short and long terms quick response interventions, integrating multiple sectors. At the same time Hornlink is seeking medium and longer term strategies, to contribute to the recovery of the country.

  • Food baskets distribution
  • Provision of essential drugs and response to outbreaks of infectious diseases
  • Supply of safe water (water trucking, rehabilitation of water points)
